Frequently asked questions
Which government savings scheme gives the highest return?+
Small-savings interest rates are set by the Government of India every quarter, so the ranking changes. Check the current rates on the National Savings Institute or India Post website.
Which schemes save tax?+
Under the old tax regime, PPF, Sukanya Samriddhi, SCSS and NSC deposits qualify for Section 80C. The new regime does not offer these deductions.
How is a government scheme different from a mutual fund?+
Government small-savings schemes pay a fixed, government-set rate but usually lock your money in for years. Mutual funds are market-linked — returns are not guaranteed — but many, like liquid funds, let you withdraw anytime.
